Sea Shepherd has been actively working to protect the ocean since 1977. We are the only marine conservation organization in the world with its own fleet to combat illegal activities at sea. Our work stops poaching, ensures that conservation laws are respected and prevents the destruction and exploitation of marine habitats. Our goal is to preserve the ocean for future generations.
Our organization was once founded by Captain Paul Watson, and today Sea Shepherd has grown into a global movement that inspires many people. With thousands of volunteers in more than 20 countries and supporters around the world, we make a difference every day and save the lives of countless marine creatures. Become a part of our movement and join our mission.
We must not allow the ocean to die before our eyes, but it is: marine species are currently disappearing twice as fast as those on land. The main causes of this loss are the destruction of habitats through fishing, poaching, marine pollution, eutrophication and advancing climate change. The loss of biodiversity and the effects on our ecosystems affect us all. The ocean is our life support system: it regulates the weather and climate, provides well over half of the oxygen we need to live, stores a significant amount of CO2 emissions and serves as a necessary food source for a large part of the world's population.
Protecting the ocean means protecting our lives.
For a healthy future, we need a healthy ocean. That's why we need to change the way we treat it and its inhabitants. Ocean protection starts in our heads, when we go shopping and in our closets. The small everyday decisions that each and every one of us makes are important. When, if not now?
Six tips to help actively protect our oceans:
- Regulate your consumption and ideally avoid eating fish and meat completely.
- Try to live as climate-neutrally as possible.
- Inform friends and acquaintances about marine conservation and help us to educate other people.
- Avoid the use of single-use plastic and use ecological alternatives.
- Take part in a beach cleanup or organize your own cleanup campaign in your area.
- Support the work of Sea Shepherd and express your support: take a photo with your Sea Shepherd garment and share your message on Instagram using #ForTheOcean - together we can motivate other people to join us.
Because if there's one thing worth fighting for, it's life. Are you ready?
